High-Speed Trains Collision Kills Over Twenty in Spain

(MENAFN) At least 21 fatalities have been confirmed and 25 individuals sustained critical injuries following a catastrophic derailment and collision involving two high-speed trains near Cordoba in southern Spain on Sunday, authorities reported.

Approximately 100 additional passengers suffered less severe injuries in the disaster. The incident unfolded around 19:45 local time (1845 GMT) when a train transporting 317 passengers along the Malaga-Madrid corridor jumped the tracks near Amaduz—roughly 20 km from Cordoba—for causes that remain under investigation, Spanish authorities stated.

The derailed locomotive then slammed into a second high-speed train traveling on a parallel track from Madrid to Huelva, forcing that train off the rails as well.

Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente characterized the crash as a "terrible impact," explaining the final two carriages of the Malaga-Madrid train derailed and collided with the leading two carriages of the approaching train, propelling them from the tracks.

Emergency response teams from the Andalusia region rushed to the scene, while local residents volunteered to transport those with minor injuries to a neighboring sports facility for immediate medical attention.

Spain's Military Emergency Unit was mobilized to support rescue efforts. Rail operations on the impacted route have been halted until at least Tuesday, officials confirmed.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez posted on social media that he and his administration are monitoring the accident closely. Spain's Royal Family has offered condolences to bereaved families.

Rescue missions continued late Sunday as authorities cautioned that casualty figures could shift in coming hours.

Rail infrastructure operator Adif announced it established information centers at Atocha Station in Madrid, plus locations in Malaga and Huelva, for relatives seeking passenger information. A dedicated telephone hotline has been activated.

Spain's most lethal previous train disaster happened in July 2013, when 79 people perished after a high-speed train derailed while approaching Santiago de Compostela due to excessive velocity.
